The City of Long Beach, New York is seeking a full time Assistant Corporation Counsel to be part of a dynamic legal team that advises the City in its day to day operation and legislation. The City of Long Beach is situated on a barrier island, just off the south shore of Long Island. It is one of only two fully- autonomous cities on Long Island, with a population of approximately 34,000 people, spread across four square miles. The City's beautiful sandy beaches are one of the finest in the state along with our newly built 2.1 mile boardwalk.
The Office of the Corporation Counsel provides advice and counsel to the City Council, the City Manager, and other municipal departments, boards and commissions. The position of Assistant Corporation Counsel involves the preparing and reviewing of legal documents, representing the City of Long Beach at state and federal trial-level and appellate courts, as well as administrative proceedings. The Office of the Corporation Counsel handles a variety of cases in diverse subject matter areas such as: personal injury law, labor and employment law (grievances, arbitration, contract negotiation, etc.), zoning and land use, commercial litigation and transactional work, City Court prosecutions (traffic/parking/local zoning), among others.
Ideal candidates must possess excellent research, writing, organizational, and communication skills. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to work both cooperatively with others and independently, as circumstances demand, and must show a strong ability to take initiative and solve problems.
Requirements: Bar admission in New York State with 1 - 3 years of experience handling a civil case load. Availability for occasional evening meetings.
Salary is commensurate with experience, with a lucrative benefits package (which includes health, dental and vision care insurance), as well as membership in the New York State pension system.
