Job Description NYC Health + Hospitals is seeking an attorney with 3 to 10 years of medical malpractice defense or medical malpractice claims experience to work in the Claims and Litigation Division of the Office of Legal Affairs.The chosen candidate will be an integral part of a team of claims attorneys who manage medical malpractice claims filed against the largest health care system in the country. Responsibilities of this position will include managing and providing oversight of outside defense counsel, developing defense strategies, recommending medical experts, setting reserves, and assessing potential exposure of assigned claims, with the goal of bringing an appropriate resolution of claims in a cost effective manner. Additional duties may include identifying claim patterns, collaborating with senior staff and management on risk management and quality assurance issues, as well as making recommendations for loss control. Demonstrated medical knowledge is essential for this position. Attorneys with relevant nursing experience preferred. Excellent writing skills are required.
Minimum Qualifications A baccalaureate degree or equivalent, and LLB or JD from an accredited School of Law; and admission to New York State Bar; and Three (3) years of experience and background in the practice of law subsequent to admission to the Bar in matters of litigation, negligence, corporate law, contracts, real estate, labor relations, labor law and employee relations, or Two (2) years of experience and background in the practice of law subsequent to admission to the Bar in matters of litigation, negligence, corporate law, contracts, real estate, labor relations, employment law and employee relations, with two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in a professional or managerial capacity in respective fields applicable to the general body of law, specialties or practice.
