About The Position
  • Under general supervision, Attorney/Assistant Facilitators provide legal information to eligible self-represented litigants in Superior Court in accordance with applicable statutes, regulations and court policies. Positions in this class do not establish an attorney-client relationship or represent a party in court.
  • This list is representative of duties that may be performed, but is not all-inclusive of duties that may be required:
  • Provides a variety of services on family law civil, probate, traffic and criminal expungements or other matters to self-represented litigants in Superior Court, consistent with applicable statutes and court policy.
  • Designs and conducts clinics/classes for self-represented litigants in Superior Court for the purpose of enabling the litigants to represent themselves in family law or other legal matters.
  • Provides educational materials to litigants concerning the legal process.
  • Distributes necessary court forms, and provides assistance in completing the forms.
  • Uses specialized software programs.
  • Provides information and assistance on court processes and procedures.
  • Identifies and makes referrals to community resources in program areas such as family law, child support, small claims, traffic and minor offenses, and other matters as appropriate.
  • May supervise a small group of Self Help Center staff or coordinate volunteers.

The Court has several immediate vacancies in the Facilitator Program, located at the Lamoreaux Justice Center in Orange. The ideal candidates will have experience working with governmental child support cases (IV-D) as a Family Law Facilitator or Self-Help Attorney, Child Support Services Department Attorney or a private attorney who specializes in this area. Note: These are limited term positions.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Experience: At least one year post-Bar experience in the practice of family, civil and/or probate law, including the mediation of legal disputes - OR - two years of post-Bar experience as a research attorney in the area of family, civil and/or probate law.
  • License Required: Active member of the State Bar of California.

Desirable Skills and Experience:
  • Experience working with low to moderate income litigants.
  • Experience with family law and child support cases.
  • Experience supervising professional level staff.
  • Experience working with pro se litigants in a Self-Help Center or with a legal services provider.
  • Spanish/English or Vietnamese/English bilingual skills.
