The Legal Aid Society, the nation's oldest and largest social justice legal services organization, offers an intense and rewarding Fall 2019 clerkship experience to 2L and 3L law students who wish to volunteer in an office dedicated to the creative and zealous advocacy of indigent clients charged with homicide. The Homicide Defense Task Force is comprised of highly skilled investigators, mitigation specialists, paralegal case-handlers, and attorneys providing client-centered representation in all five boroughs of New York City
Primary Duties/Responsibilities Fall law clerks will work closely with attorneys in the Task Force and conduct significant legal research, draft motions, analyze discovery, interview incarcerated clients, help develop mitigation, and assist in trial preparation.
2Ls and 3Ls are eligible to apply for the Fall 2019 term
This is a part-time unpaid position
Relevant clinical program or work experience is preferred, but not required
Demonstrated commitment or interest to indigent defense
Demonstrated commitment and interest in serving racially and socioeconomically oppressed communities
Ability to work collegially and collaboratively with all members of the staff
Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines, and think critically
