Deputy City Attorney, Municipal Division
  • The Santa Monica City Attorney's Office seeks an attorney with at least five years of legal experience to serve as a Deputy City Attorney in its Municipal Division.
  • The Municipal Division advises the City Council, City Manager, and City staff on the legal aspects of City actions, seeking to guide the City in achieving its objectives legally, ethically, and effectively. Throughout its work, the City of Santa Monica strives to create a model 21st Century government and to foster a sustainable city of wellbeing that works for everyone. To that end, the Municipal Division has, for example, obtained a consent decree with the Federal Aviation Administration allowing the City to close the Santa Monica Airport in 2028; preserved $200 million in redevelopment funds following dissolution of the Redevelopment Agency; and drafted and defended municipal laws including the City's Home-Sharing Ordinance and Affordable Housing Production Program in the face of significant legal challenges.
  • The successful applicant will have a combination of required and preferred qualifications, including a demonstrated commitment to advancing the public interest, high ethical standards, and the skills and abilities necessary to draft and defend municipal laws on behalf of a City that thrives on innovation.

Required qualifications:
  • Sound judgment and high ethical standards;
  • Strong communication, advocacy, and research skills;
  • Minimum of five years of experience advising clients;
  • Ability to work collegially with colleagues and clients; and
  • License to practice law in the State of California or willingness and ability to obtain prompt admission to the California State Bar.

Preferred qualifications:
  • Experience advising public entity clients;
  • Demonstrated commitment to advancing the public interest;
  • Creativity and ability to develop innovative solutions to complex policy problems; and
Expertise in administrative law, constitutional law, land use law, and/or other areas of municipal law.
