SummarY Under general guidance and direction from judge, performs professional legal research and analysis on complex legal issues.
Example of Duties:
Researches legal questions; reviews record, transcript of trial, appellate briefs, and attends oral argument to acquire a complete understanding of the case.
Prepares and drafts opinions upon request; edits opinions according to judge's instructions; finalizes drafts of opinions.
Prepares bench memoranda summaries of assigned cases for judges who will be hearing the case; reviews records, briefs, and oral arguments to acquire complete understanding of cases; compiles references on laws and decisions; reviews current case law.
Acts as court bailiff when judge is presiding over the panel; runs recording machine; calls court to order.
Performs related duties as assigned.
Typical Qualifications: (includes knowledge, skills, and abilities required upon entry into position and trainable after entry into position)
Graduation from an accredited law school with a Juris Doctorate degree.
Preferably a Member of Utah State Bar. If not admitted to the Utah State Bar, must successfully complete the Bar requirements at next opportunity.
Working knowledge of the appellate and state court systems, working knowledge of Utah Law and legal terminology
Skills in legal research, legal writing format and citation techniques
Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing; ability to critically analyze the arguments of counsel; ability to work independently
Ability to follow written and oral instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, judges, other agencies, and the public; ability to maintain confidential information
