The Office of the Vice President and General Counsel of Yale University has an opening for a full-time beginning or junior attorney for an academic-year term to begin in July 2019. The Office, which includes 21 attorneys, is responsible for overseeing or conducting all of the legal affairs of the University, serving as in-house counsel to the central administration and the administrations of Yale College, the graduate and professional schools, and their constituent departments, as well as coordinating the work of outside counsel where utilized. This fellowship provides recent law school graduates with an excellent and unusual opportunity to develop legal research and writing skills and other experience in a wide variety of fields, including education law, federal and state regulation, commercial and corporate law, and litigation, all within the context of a major not-for-profit research university. The Office of the General Counsel is also responsible for the federal relations of the University, involving communications and commentary on issues concerning higher education to members of Congress, their staffs, and various government agencies and officials. Work will include legal and fact research, the drafting of memoranda, correspondence, and legal documents, and a variety of other tasks under the supervision of the office’s attorneys. Strong academic credentials and well-developed writing skills are important qualifications for this position. This position is available for a single academic year term with a possibility for a one-year extension, and does not lead to continuing employment.
- Researches and drafts memoranda, opinions and correspondence on a wide range of legal issues.
- Reviews and drafts contracts and policies under supervision of counsel.
- Analyses University policies and procedures for compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements.
- May perform other duties as assigned.
