Job summary:
Spring/Summer 2019 Paid Law Clerk with the Florida Office of the Attorney General Consumer Protection Division in Tallahassee, Florida.

The Florida Office of the Attorney General Consumer Protection Division is currently seeking a part time paid law clerk beginning in the Spring/Summer of 2019 in the Tallahassee office. The position requires 15-20 hours per week.

The position provides an opportunity to engage in substantive legal research and investigative analysis and actively participate in the investigation of violations of the Florida Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act (FDUTPA). Law clerks work closely with a variety of attorneys, investigators, and paralegals on cases with a wide range of issues.

The Consumer Protection Division is the enforcement authority for all multi-circuit violations of the Florida Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act (FDUTPA). The Division protects consumers by initiating investigations against entities that employ unfair methods of competition or unconscionable, deceptive and unfair practices in any trade or commerce. The Division investigates the activities of entities with multi-circuit activities, as the State Attorney has primary jurisdiction for single circuit activity. In addition, the Division participates in investigations of national companies in cooperation with other states and the Federal Trade Commission.

Ksa/examples of work performed:
Duties of the Law Clerk
  • Perform legal research
  • Assist attorneys with all phases of litigation and summarize findings in reports
  • Assist with drafting of legal documents such as memoranda of law, motions, pleadings, discovery requests, and responses
  • Attend hearings, depositions and meetings with parties and outside counsel
  • Review production
  • Interview potential witnesses and draft sworn statements
  • Assist in evaluation of possible FDUTPA violations
  • Assist in investigative research by performing data analysis, asset searching, and review of financial documents

Minimum requirements:
  • Must be a first, second or third year law student.
  • Preference will be given to applicants who are second or third year law students. Pay is commensurate with years of experience. $13.00 1st year; $14.00 2L and $15 3L.
