The Privacy Officer/Counsel supports the Global Privacy Office through preparation and review of privacy documents across a global organization. The Privacy Officer/Associate Counsel will work with local and international business partners at varying leadership levels to facilitate privacy and data protection compliance. Seeks ways to improve processes and help the department function more efficiently and effectively. Manages privacy incident review and response by privacy group and coordinates responses data subject’s requests.
The Global Privacy Office is part of the Alexion Legal Group and the position can be based in Boston or New Haven and will be reporting to the Chief Privacy Officer, who is located in our Boston offices. The Privacy Officer/Counsel will support privacy risk, compliance and legal matters in relation to North and South America, as well as corporate matters.
Job Duties & Responsibilities
Work hand in hand with key stakeholders in the development and maintenance of processes and procedures to maintain compliance with Alexion policies and guidelines, as well as applicable privacy and data protection laws, regulations and guidelines.
Provide privacy-related guidance and support for the business and corporate functions for inquiries, incidents, and privacy risk/impact assessments, including Data Protection Impact Assessments.
Document the personal data processing activities conducted by the businesses and staff functions operating in the region or country and participate in regional new product, initiative or function due diligence risk management processes to ensure they address data protection and privacy issues
Develop and administer any regional or country-level privacy policies and standards, in coordination with the Global Data Privacy Officer; facilitate the continuous improvement of policies and standard operating procedures for the protection and security of personal information.
Manage and work with the business to support the process for handling data subject rights requests.
Assist with the vendor privacy and security risk management process, including conducting and reviewing vendor due diligence, supporting in the contracting process and assisting and monitoring the vendor’s ongoing compliance with the business owners.
Support fellow members of the Legal Group on global legal/privacy projects.
Bachelor's degree; JD highly preferable; CIPP certification or its equivalent highly preferable
5+ years of experience in Privacy, Legal, Compliance or Risk Management with a strong privacy or data protection law knowledge
Excellent writing, proofreading, and editing skills
Strong verbal communication skills and attention to detail
Ability to interact professionally with all levels of management, multiple geographies, internal subject matter experts, legal staff, vendors, and clients
Ability to prioritize and complete daily workload and projects with minimal supervision and in accordance with deadlines and shifting priorities
Ability to communicate and manage personal project timelines and responsibilities
Strong understanding of Privacy law, including US (State and Federal), Canadian, European Union (GDPR) and other applicable privacy laws preferred; familiarity with appropriate security and technical controls desirable.
Ability to prioritize, adapt and work with cross-functional teams in a dynamic global work environment under limited supervision
Contribute to various internal operations projects (i.e., form templates, policies).
Ability to speak, read, write and understand language other than English desirable
Autonomous and self-motivated team player necessary
Demonstrated ability to quickly grasp business issues, balance risks, exhibit and exercise sound judgment
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously with excellent project management and verbal and written communication skills
