Orange County has an opening for a Part-time Staff Attorney. This position is a 20-hour a week position. This position provides legal advice and representation to the County and its departments, offices, officials, boards, commissions and agencies on litigation and business matters. Ensures County compliance with all applicable codes, laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures. Recommends actions necessary to correct deviations or violations. Commences legal action or defends the County in all judicial, administrative, and legislative proceedings, as necessary, for the protection or enforcement of the rights of the County, its officers and officials. Researches, develops and reports on relevant case law, statutes and regulations pertinent to administrative and operational functions. Provides legal review for all contracts and legally binding agreements. Drafts contracts and agreements in matters initiated by the County. Receives and responds to difficult and sensitive department or community concerns and complaints. Prepares all bonds, contracts and other written instruments to which the County is a party. Reviews contract specifications. Approves the substance and form of County policies and other documents. Ensures that files are opened and insurance carriers are put on notice of tort claims against the County.
Requires a Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school and five (5) years of experience in the practice of law, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Must be licensed and eligible to practice law in North Carolina and in good standing with the North Carolina State Bar.
Must possess a driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina.
