Summary of the Job Description and the Ideal Candidate our organization is currently seeking
African Communities Public Health Coalition is seeking a part time attorney. The ideal Candidate must have a demonstrated and sincere interest in working with Africans and Caribbean immigrants in Los Angeles County. The staff attorney is expected to work in a team environment with the African Coalition Staff and advocates who employ a holistic approach to legal services: one which values client empowerment, security, and a coordinated response to client needs. The attorney will primarily focus on immigration issues, but the services rendered will extend to public benefits, advocacy with law enforcement, staff training and community engagement under the supervision of the executive director.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
  • Case Assessment and Strategy Development
  • Conduct initial screening, legal intakes, and assessment of clients’ legal needs
  • Conducts investigation and research to assess claims
  • Recommends level of service and develops case strategy
  • Assist clients, volunteer attorneys, and other legal services staff in drafting and filing court forms
  • Comply with all confidentiality requirements Client Advocacy
  • Drafts legal documents, conducts discovery, and case management
  • Provide legal clinics to clients on selected topics
  • Provide assistance to clients in understanding the legal system and preparation for court
  • Provides oral advocacy and negotiation in hearings and trials
  • Connects clients to non-legal supportive services as needed
  • Case Management
  • Ensures timely and accurate case file maintenance including
  • Electronic records
  • Maintain good working relationships with clients through frequent proactive communication
  • Meets case deadlines and calendar court events and client visits by effectively delegating tasks to designated staff, and reviews all review all completed documents for accuracy and completion
  • Program Support
  • Devise and implement policy to ensure efficient and successful management of legal services
  • Delivers community outreach presentations
  • Collects and reports case-related data
  • Completes grant-required forms

Other Duties
Adheres to standards of professional responsibility; Adheres to all African Coalition policies and procedures, including the standards set forth in the Performance and Evaluation Standards; Participates in mandatory staff trainings and meetings; other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  • J.D. degree from an ABA accredited Law School
  • Membership in good standing in the California Bar Association
  • Minimum Three years experience with Immigration petitions Preferred
  • LANGUAGE: Bilingual In English, French, Spanish and other African languages Preferred

Desired Knowledge and Skills
  • 3 years of litigation experience
  • Demonstrated commitment to serving low-income people
  • Ability to work successfully with people from diverse backgrounds
