The Illinois State Bar Association (ISBA) is the premiere legal association in the state. Its primary focus is to help Illinois lawyers practice more efficiently by providing time and money-saving services.

We are seeking an experienced attorney to serve as Staff Counsel in our Springfield headquarters and provide legal advice and counsel to the Association's leadership and professional staff on matters of relevance to the Association.

Essential Job Functions
  • Provide advice and analysis to elected and appointed leadership and professional staff on Association bylaw and policy and applicable statutory and regulatory requirements.
  • Represent the Association in contract and other negotiations.
  • Represent the Association as necessary in formal legal matters including amicus curiae filings, UPL prosecutions, and other types of legal process.
  • Participate in Presidential or other leadership initiatives.
  • Participate in professional staff initiatives, programs, and projects.
  • Participate as staff liaison, from time to time, on committees/section councils with specialized need for formal Association legal involvement, such as Professional Conduct, the UPL Task Force, Judicial Advisory Polls, and Judicial Evaluations Committee.
  • Provide ethics related educational information to members upon request and for inclusion in Association media.
  • Provide review and editing of Association legal materials.

A J.D. degree from an ABA accredited law school, admission to the Illinois bar, and active status with the Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission free of any current or past disciplinary sanctions.
Two years of legal experience, preferably in private practice or a not-for-profit corporation, is desirable. Practical and specific experience with professional conduct and ethics matters is also desirable.
