Mercy Corps responsibilities
For the duration of this internship assignment the intern will receive:
  • Training and supervisory support
  • Workstation with computer, internet, and phone access
  • Mercy Corps email account
  • Access to Mercy Corps online tools
  • Access to tools, materials and communication requirements for this project to be undertaken
Intern responsibilities
Intern will remain responsible for all costs associated with:
  • Travel to and from Mercy Corps HQ
  • Accommodation, travel and living expenses
  • All other costs associated with this internship

Recognizing that our work is done within the context of limited resources and fast-paced decision-making, Legal Services does not attempt to eliminate all risk or problems, but simply to make decision-makers aware of issues and minimize the risk as much as practicable.

Learning Objectives:
  • At the end of the program the intern will have a deep understanding of the nature of the work and responsibilities of an in-house attorney, will understand how to interact with internal clients, will have a basic understanding of the legal issues that an INGO faces, will have learned at least one significant issue in great depth.

Deliverables:
Deliverables will include:
  • Research memoranda covering various topics of law relating to Mercy Corps operations
  • Review of contracts for use in field
  • Participation in meetings
  • Interaction with internal clients

The Ideal Candidate:
  • Completion of the second year in law school (first year may be considered as well)
  • In the top 20% of law school class
  • Experience working on international issues
  • Great communication skills – written and spoken
  • Mercy Corps interns and team members represent the agency both during and outside of work hours and are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner and respect local laws, customs and MC's policies, procedures, and values at all times and in all in-country venues.
